
The Pamban Bridge in Tamil Nadu is one of the most dangerous railway bridges in the world. It was built by the South Coast Railway. Construction of the bridge began in 1911 and was completed in 1914. It is the world’s longest-running bridge. It is 6,777 feet or 2,036 feet lower. A bridge has also been built in parallel to the bridge. The road was built in 1974 by the Indian Highways Department. The bridge was signed by the Indian Highway with the Nilkantan Brothers in Madras. It cost Rs 537.57 lakh. The bridge is named after Anna Gandhi’s Gandhi Bridge. It is 2,345 km long. The Pamban Road Bridge connects to NH 49. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1988.
On December 23, 1964, the Dhanushkoti passenger train overturned on the Pamban Railway Bridge, killing all 150 passengers on board. Another incident took place in 2013 when the Indian Navy entered the barrage, causing minor damage.
